Insitu is an experimental performance company directed by Cynthia Stevens.

Rooted in dance and multidisciplinary in nature, insitu incorporates original live vocal work, music, theater, and visual art to explore the confluence of the body, community, and environment.  Insitu combines rigorous investigation and unruly invention.

Through successive pieces we are examining the intersections between the body, community and environment. We are exploring questions such as how can performance foster a sensual connection of people and place? What is the relationship between embodiment, artistic practice and sustainable living?

Frequently our productions are site-based and public art. We have performed for thousands of hikers, lake-goers and commuters who might not otherwise see performance. Our goal is to create pieces in these settings that invite the audience to play a more active role in shaping their performance experience. Through their many choices of what to look at, smell, touch and listen to they can experience the work in relationship to and as an element of a larger environment.
